Likely, Van Dijk is still to be some way off returning to on-pitch training. But the images of his his rehabilitation will be a boost to Liverpool who have suffered a number of injuries this season, particularly in defence

Liverpool have not ruled out the prospect of van Dijk featuring again this season and they are hopeful he can make a speedy recovery despite the severity of the injury.

Manager Jurgen Klopp recently spoke about his defender’s injury as he said: ‘Considering the circumstances, he’s doing really well.

‘His knee doesn’t look good, to be honest; it doesn’t look like a knee should look – but it looks good for a knee with that surgery and the time he had since the surgery.

‘So, yes, of course we are in contact and he’s doing well, that’s true.’

Liverpool are also without his main centre-back partner Joe Gomez who picked up a knee injury during training for England.

Despite their defensive crisis Liverpool have done well as they sit joint top of the Premier League and finished top of their Champions League group.
