Gianluca Scamacca chose to join West Ham United instead of getting involved with the Ligue 1 champions in France.

A little about Gianluca Scamacca

The Hammers sealed the signing of the Italian player from Sassuolo. PSG were also chasing Gianluca’s signing, but the player chose to continue his career in PL. Gianluca Scamacca is Moyes’ fourth first-team signing in the summer transfer window and West Ham supporters will be hoping the Italian can make an instant impact when the new season kicks off.

The Italian international joined Lazio’s youth system in 2009 and spent three years in his books before joining Roma’s academy. In 2015, at the age of 16, he moved abroad for the first time and joined PSV Eindhoven. After graduating from PSV’s youth academy, Gianluca spent a year with the club’s reserve team before signing for Sassuolo in 2017.

The Italian was then sent to spells at Cremonese, PEC Zwolle, Ascoli and Genoa but returned to Sassuolo last summer and made a huge impact in the 2021-22 season, scoring 16 goals in 35 Serie A matches. Gianluca was called up to the Italy squad in September 2021 and now has seven caps under his belt, but has yet to open his goal tally for the Azzurri.

How the Hammers won the race

Paris Saint-Germain was reportedly in advanced talks with Sassuolo over a deal for Gianluca, but the hammerers swooped in at the last minute with a rival offer. Gianluca Scamacca quickly reached a personal deal with West Ham United before completing medical, with the player choosing to try out in the PL instead of contacting the star-studded Paris Saint-Germain squad in France.

How much did the Hammers pay for Gianluca Scamacca?

The Hammers will fork up an initial fee of £30.5m to Sassuolo for the Italian’s services, while another £5m must be paid in addition. The contract also includes a 10 percent clause on the future resale of Gianluca Scamacca.
