On Wednesday, West Indies recalled opener Evin Lewis for the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia. However, all-rounder Andre Russell and spinner Sunil Narine have been left out from their 15-man squad.

Evin Lewis last played for the team in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, while the experienced Russell and Narine were ignored by the selectors in recent months.

West Indies have included uncapped all-rounders Yannick Caria and Ramon Reifer in the squad. Whole team will be led by Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell as their deputy captain.

A hard-hitting batsman down the order and a natural wicket taker, Russell is one of the world’s most sought after players in domestic T20 leagues but chief selector Desmond Haynes said he was not convinced with the 34-year-old’s form.

“Earlier this year we had a meeting with Andre Russell,” Haynes said on the sidelines of a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match on Wednesday.

“We are still not convinced, he is not performing as well as we would like to see him in the competition (CPL). I think in the situation with Andre Russell, we have decided to just move on, and someone will Looking for someone who is in form and doing well in the T20 format.”

Haynes said captain Pooran reached out to Narine but added, “…I’m not sure he wants to play.”

Narine, who also ply his trade in T20 leagues across the world, last played for West Indies in 2019. There was no room for all-rounder Fabian Allen either.

“We have selected a mix of youth and experience to represent the West Indies,” Haynes said.

“In the selection process, we are aware of the ongoing Caribbean Premier League and we are looking at players who are playing very well.”

Two-time champions West Indies play Australia in a two-match series ahead of the World Cup and will take on Scotland in their first match on 17 October.
