West Indies have appointed former captain Darren Sammy as the coach of the ODI and T20 team.

The 39-year-old, who led the West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles, replaces Phil Simmons, who resigned from his coaching position after the West Indies’ exit from the T20 World Cup in October.

Apart from Sammy, a new name has been added to the coaching list. Andre Coley has been appointed as the coach of the Test team.

48-year-old Coley played seven times for Jamaica and was the interim coach of the West Indies on the Test tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa this year.

All-rounder Darren Sammy played 38 Tests, 126 ODIs and 68 T20Is for the West Indies in his 12-year-long international career.

After retiring from international career, he continued to play franchise cricket for 5 years and has coached in the Caribbean Premier League and Pakistan Super League since 2020. He captained the West Indies in the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cups.

After becoming the coach, Darren Sammy’s first task will be to prepare the West Indies team for the three-match ODI series which will be played against the United Arab Emirates. There is a big challenge in front of them with their partner.

The West Indies are yet to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup to be held in India in October. The West Indies will have to do so through a 10-team qualification tournament starting next month in Zimbabwe, where only the top two teams will advance.

Darren Sammy shared a few words after being appointed as coach. “It will be a challenge but I am ready for it and excited about it. I am eagerly waiting for this opportunity, especially considering the players we have and I believe I can make an impact in the dressing room.”
