The legendary West Indies bowler Andy Roberts has recently made a huge statement regarding the 1983 World Cup. He believes that India was just lucky to win that World Cup. The Indian team was led by Kapil Dev at the time and wrote history by winning their maiden World title after defeating the defending champions and mighty West Indies in the final. West Indies, who have consecutively won two World Cups, entered the tournament as favourites, with hosts England and Australia being strong challengers.
India started the campaign with massive victory
Very few People thought that India would have a chance of qualifying in the semi-finals, let alone winning the tournament, but Kapil Dev’s side proved everyone wrong and grabbed the title. India was placed with the defending champions, the West Indies, and Australia in the same group. That time, each team had to face each other twice, and the top two teams of the group advanced to the semi-finals. India’s record in the last two editions of the World Cup did not inspire any confidence, but the team started their campaign by defeating the West Indies in the first league stage match.
West Indies lost first match since 1975
This was the first time since the tournament’s beginning in 1975 that West Indies were defeated in a match. In the second leg, India was defeated by the Windies but overcame Australia and Zimbabwe twice to seal a place in the semi-finals, where they defeated hosts England and entered the finals. Despite defeating the West Indies in the opening match, many thought that they would not be able to win the finals, but India pulled off a massive victory by defending 183 runs against the Windies.
That was just India’s luck- Roberts
India defeated West Indies twice in the 1983 World Cup, but Roberts, who was part of West Indies’ dangerous bowling attack, believes that West Indies were definitely the better team in that tournament. Recently, in an interview with Sportstar, Robert said, “We were in form, but it was a bad game. That was just India’s luck in 1983, because that great team of ours lost two games in 1983, both to India. A few months later, we beat India 6-0, so it was just that game in the final that favoured India. We didn’t get beaten, we just lost the game.
