West Indies got off to a great start in the third test match against England but a long lasting 10th wicket partnership allowed England to have at least something to fight for.

On the first day, the hosts bundled out the guests for a score of 204. England’s innings came to an end in the last over of the day.

Fast bowler Shakib Mahmood (49) played a life saving innings for England down the order, he was the number 11 batsmen and high scoring man for England in this match. For West Indies, Jaden Seals bagged three key wickets for West Indies.

West Indies won the toss and asked England to bat first. They had a shaky start and failed to anticipate the early swinging bowling. England lost its first wicket on 23 and from there, it was a continuous collapse. Captain Joe Root had also returned to the pavilion on a duck.

Caribbean all-rounder Kyle Meyers took two wickets. Meyers bowled seven maidens in 10 overs and spent only 13 runs.

England’s middle order collapsed badly and the team’s seventh wicket fell on the score of 67. Six of England’s batsmen could not even touch the double figure.

Opener Alex Lees scored 31 runs. Chris Woakes (25) also struggled a bit, but the team had lost nine wickets at 114. Craig Overton also scored 14 runs.

Jack Leach and Mahmood shared a 90-run partnership for the last wicket to take England past 200. While Leach remained unbeaten on 41 off 141 balls, Mahmood was dismissed after scoring 49 off 118 balls.

Batting 36 overs, both kept their team in the game till the last over of the day. Mahmood hit four fours and a six. Apart from Seals’ three wickets for West Indies, Kemar Roach, Kyle Meyers and Alzarri Joseph also took two wickets each. Jermaine Blackwood took one wicket in only 1.4 overs.

Day 2 will be more crucial for England because they can’t allow West Indies to take the lead. Also, they are playing this series without their ace bowlers. A lot will depend on Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, it will be their job to make West Indies fall short of a challenging score.
