West Indies

West Indies take on Ireland in the second one-day international of the three-match series at Sabina Park Stadium on Thursday. West Indies currently leads 1-0 in the series, having won the first ODI by 24 runs. West Indies batted first and managed to score 269 runs in the first innings.

They made the worst possible start, losing four wickets for just 62 runs inside 19 overs. However, what followed was an outstanding partnership between Shamarh Brooks and Kieron Pollard. The duo started their innings cautiously before changing the gears.

The duo added 155 runs for the fifth wicket, helping West Indies get back into the game. Playing his first ODI, Brooks played a sensational knock of 93 runs off just 89 balls. Skipper, Kieron Pollard made 69 runs off 66 deliveries. Thanks to those vital contributions, West Indies managed to score 269 in the first innings.

Ireland

For Ireland, Mark Adair and Craig Young picked three wickets each, while Andy McBrine picked 2 wickets. Ireland too didn’t make a great start with the bat in the second innings as they lost William Porterfield for a duck. However, Andrew Balbirnie played a sensational knock of 71 runs off 94 balls. Andy McBrine added 34 runs before getting retired hurt, while Harry Tector amassed 53 off 68 deliveries. Ireland was cruising in the chase till the time Balbirnie and Tector were at the crease.

However, Romario Shepherd then picked the wicket of Balbirnie in the 37th over, while Odean Smith accounted for Harry Tector’s wicket in the very next over to help West Indies get back into the game. Wickets fell in very short intervals after that and Ireland were bowled out for 245 runs.

For Ireland, the second one-day international will be a must-win game for them. A win on Thursday will help them stay alive in the series. In a big boost for them, Paul Sterling has recovered from Covid-19 and he is likely to play tomorrow. Ireland would be keen to showcase better performances and come out triumphs in the second match of the West Indies vs Ireland ODI series.
