Marcelo, Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane would be the three captains of Real Madrid if Sergio Ramos leaves the club this summer.

Who will be captain after Ramos’ departure?

That would mean that the armband would pass to a non-Spanish player for the first time in years. Ramos took the captaincy from Iker Casillas, Casillas from Raul Gonzalez and, stretching back to 2003, Raul from Fernando Hierro. In that respect, Marcelo – the first in line for the honour – would be making history and his appointment would result in a break with that tradition.

But such is the ‘law’ of the Real Madrid dressing room, which is that the armband passes to the longest-serving player. At times that has not been the case, with Jose Mourinho famously appointing an outfield player as his skipper and taking the honour away from Casillas. With Marcelo not expected to be a regular in the Real Madrid defence, Benzema would seem the more likely outfield player to be captain.

First Spanish play after Karim and Marcelo?

The first Spanish player that would appear in the captaincy hierarchy would be Nacho Fernandez, just ahead of Luka Modric. No one has spent more time at Real Madrid than Nacho – who is close to racking up 20 years with Los Merengues – but not all of them have been spent with the first-team squad, leaving Marcelo in pole position.

If he does leave this summer, Ramos will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the club’s most successful captains. He has held the armband for six seasons, in which Los Blancos have scooped up 12 trophies. Casillas won seven in five seasons and Raul only four in seven campaigns. Ramos began by lifting the Champions League in 2016, and the 2019/20 LaLiga Santander triumph may prove his last. He has won everything as captain, except the Copa del Rey
