After making a remarkable turnaround as one of the most impactful batsmen in the IPL, Rahane was recalled to the Indian squad after almost 18 months for the World Test Championship final, where he was the highest run hitter for the team. Now Rahane is also re-appointed as the vice captain of the Test team for the West Indies tour. Although Legend Sunil Gavaskar welcomed Rahane’s promotion, He stated that India missed an opportunity to groom a Youngster for future captaincy.

 Rahane made a great comeback
Till recently, Rahane’s name was not even considered for India’s Test team. He was dropped for the home series against Sri Lanka last year and was also dismissed as vice captain in 2021. In the past few months, Rahane has risen in domestic cricket and also had a great IPL season this year with the Chennai Super Kings, which helped him make a comeback in international cricket.

Saba Karim questioned the Vice-captain choice
Though Rahane is back as Vice Captain, former Indian cricketer Saba Karim questioned his appointment for the West Indies series. Saba feels that India should have picked Ravindra Jadeja or Shubman Gill as Rohit’s deputy for the West Indies test series. In an interview, she said, “I don’t know why people don’t even talk about Ravindra Jadeja. He is a constant in all formats and has been a major contributor to India’s test success. Why is he never talked about as a leader? He is irreplaceable in all formats of the game and is equally capable of leading the national team. Or if not him, then maybe Shubman Gill, If the Indian selectors think he is the future.

Jadeja conquered Australia
Jadeja hammered Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and he also played with the Chennai Super Kings, becoming the match winner in the final. The all-rounder also captained MS Dhoni’s CSK last year. Not only did Karim criticize the selectors for not considering Jadeja for the vice captaincy , but she also urged them to groom youngsters who can take over after Rohit in the upcoming years and handle the reign.

She also said that when you are looking for a change and pick youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad,  why would you make Rahane the vice captain? The former cricketer believes that If India wants to build a team for the future, they should groom a cricketer. She praised Rahane’s abilities as a leader but feels that right now the focus should be on a Young player who can replace Rohit Sharma in the future.
