CricketWhy is the West Indies Failing as a Team?

The West Indies cricket team is built of talented individual players. They show their potential in the T20 leagues throughout the globe.

Primarily, these players are known for strength and hammering ball striking ability. You can take a look at Shimron Hetmyer or Nicholas Pooran, you will find a nurtured talent. They have been runaway match winners for the last couple of years.

What are they lacking?

Every team is built of individual players but The mutual understanding for collective team goal is always missing in the West Indies.

It seems that they all choose their own way to cross the winning line. As the head coach Philip Verant Simmons mentions that they are trying to get the players in specific roles. Until, every individual player understands his role, the team will struggle for form.

Hasty and Undecided Approach

It is a team of movers and shakers. They choose their own way of playing which is to go berserk while batting. However, this approach hasn’t been a fruitful method. Their success rate falls to 53% when in that approach.

Either they get back in shell completely or they attack every ball. In other words it’s total defence or absolute attack. In some cases, it might work with the blessing of luck but it is not a permanent solution whatsoever.

Lack of discipline and Leadership

Look at Eoin Morgan, what he did with amazing leadership skills. Always leading from the front. It is a fact that in the 70s, West Indies was adept at discipline and leadership. 1975 and 1979 victory speaks of their dominance in the 1970s.

They haven’t had any consistent captains in the last couple of years. The captains they had, have individually failed to perform decisive roles. West Indies bowlers have been performing

Their bowling economy is averaging over 12 in the last four overs. When it comes to batting, their batting partnership averages less than 20 in the first 6 overs of the batting powerplay.

Undoubtedly, West Indies can destroy any opponent on their day. The potential can only be served for better if every individual player steps into the group with a firm plan and clear role. Also, sometimes it is perspective that plays decisive roles in the performance of individual players.
