Working on the assumption that both nations will win their final game against lesser opponents, then whoever wins this game is likely to secure guaranteed qualification to the World Cup.

Italy

Even though Italy’s world record 37-game unbeaten run came crashing down against Spain in the last international break, they do remain unbeaten in this World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) campaign as they prepare to meet Switzerland for a ‘winner takes all’ top-of-the-table clash. Working on the assumption that both nations will win their final game against lesser opponents, then whoever wins this game is likely to secure guaranteed qualification to the World Cup. After missing out on the 2018 World Cup, the four-time World Champions will need no extra motivation to get themselves fired up for this. Even a draw will see Italy retain their top spot and if the European Champions can continue the defensive solidity which saw them keep five clean sheets from their six WCQ games, then extending their all-time unbeaten WCQ home record seems likely.

Switzerland

Owning the same record as Italy in this group, Switzerland have been a much-improved team since the turn of the century, qualifying for the last four World Cup finals, and are set for at least a playoff chance this time around. New manager Murat Yakin is yet to be beaten and he even recorded a goalless draw against Italy on his debut, though the team will seek revenge for being beaten at this summer’s Euro finals (3-0) by the ‘Azzurri’. It would be a historic day if Switzerland were to spoil the Italian party as their sole win against Italy on their own patch came in a friendly at this venue in 1982 (0-1) – their only victory in 25 trips to the country.

Goals either side of half-time from Italy’s Manuel Locatelli swept Switzerland aside this summer. The visiting Alpine nation will feel the absence of Breel Embolo, who contributed to four of their last six goals, and may look to Mario Gavranović for an outlet; he’s found the net in four of his last five appearances for club & country. Switzerland have kept five straight clean sheets in WCQ, while manager Yakin is yet to see his side concede a competitive goal.
