Former Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure blames an increase in stupidity for football racism. He says, “fans are more stupid than before.”

YayaToure300x200In recent months incidents of racism throughout Europe have been reported. Italy’s Serie A have had many high-profile cases.

“I have had a chat with Fifa because this is something very important.” Said Toure.

“It will be difficult because the way to win this case is going to be long.”

“Fans, people, now are more stupid than before.” Added the former Ivory Coast international.

Last month, striker, Mario Balotelli, Toure’s former City team-mate, called fans who shouted racist abuse at him during a match between Brescia and Verona “small-minded” and “imbeciles.”

Cagliari fans made monkey chants towards Romelu Lukaku earlier in the season. Recently, Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport received critics for the headline “Black Friday” alongside images of Roma defender Chris Smalling and Lukaku.

In British top-flight football, there have also been incidents of racism. A man was arrested after this month’s Manchester derby for allegedly making a racist gesture towards Fred.

Toure added, “Of course it is shocking because we are in 2019. In 2020, 2025 we have kids coming through. What are we going to do? You cant continue like that.”
