Zinedine Zidane has renewed the debate over Karim Benzema’s lack of France call-ups after the striker scored his sixth straight game for Real Madrid. The 33-year-old, who has not played for France since 2015, scored twice as Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 3-1 at Balaidos. “You cannot understand that Benzema is not playing for his country,” Zidane said at full time. “Many people do not understand it. But I am happy as a coach of Real Madrid. He did a great job for the team”. A win over Celta puts Real Madrid within three points of the leaders Atletico Madrid in LaLiga. The midfield rotation could be key going into the final weeks of the campaign. “We know what the schedule is, and we know there are many games ahead,” Zidane said. “But the players are fine.”
“Yes, two of the midfielders are leaving on international duty, and it is not ideal. Now we should enjoy this victory. I don’t think the end of the season will be difficult – the opposite. We have to continue and we have been playing well lately. We are in the final stretch where everything is in the game and we are all good physically, and we are in great shape. So we suffered a little in the second half against Celta, but we interpreted the game well”. Sergio Ramos has not been with Real Madrid in Vigo due to injury, although he will play for Spain during this international break. “He is going to go with Spain because what he suffered the other day was a knock,” Zidane explained.
“We will see. He will be playing in the next five days, and it won’t be a problem. It will do him good as well.”
