“Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct charges about alleged violations of the FA’s Betting Rules.

The Brentford forward was initially charged with 232 alleged betting violations in November. On Tuesday evening, an FA spokesperson stated: “Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct charges about alleged violations of the FA’s Betting Rules. In addition to the previous charge, the forward is alleged to have violated FA Rule E8 a further 30 times from March 14, 2017 year to February 18, 2019. Ivan Toney must respond by Wednesday, January 4 2023.” Brentford said in a statement: “The FA have advised Brentford that Ivan Toney is facing additional charges related to additional alleged violations of their betting rules. Our closed discussions with Ivan and his legal representatives are ongoing. At this stage, we will make no further remarks.”

Football betting is prohibited worldwide for all players

Ivan, who was not included in England’s 26-man FIFA World Cup team, previously revealed he assisted the FA with its inquiries amid allegations that he played at matches. Following reports that he was the subject of an FA investigation, Toney tweeted on November 5: “I know a story about me in a national newspaper today. I have assisted the Football Association with their inquiries and will not make any comment until such an investigation is completed. Football betting is prohibited worldwide for all players, managers, coaches, club staff, directors and licensed agents involved in the game within the Premier League, EFL, National League, Women’s Super League, Women’s Championship and North, South and Isthmian leagues. Subject to the ban are prohibited from betting, directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition taking place anywhere in the world.

The ban also includes bets on any other football-related matters, such as player transfers, managerial appointments or team selection. The transfer of inside information to someone who uses this information for betting is also not allowed. Inside information is information that you know about due to your position in the game and that is not publicly available, such as injury or team selection news. You may not use inside information to place a bid or have anyone else do so on your behalf. Likewise, you cannot share inside information with someone else that they use to place bets.

 

Other high-profile players who have been charged and subsequently found guilty of violating the FA’s betting rules include current England FIFA World Cup team member Kieran Trippier, who was banned from football for ten weeks and fined £70,000. For telling a friend to nail the prospect of joining Atletico Madrid before his move from Tottenham in 2019.

Daniel Sturridge was also punished for leaking inside information about the transfer. After initially being given a six-week ban, his penalty was increased to a four-month ban and £150,000 after it was found that he told his brother to bet on a January 2018 move to Sevilla. Joey Barton received an 18-month ban in 2017 after placing 1,260 football bets between 2006 and 2016. The punishment earned him retirement from playing football, although the sentence was later reduced by five months on appeal.
