Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin is always in headlines for his unusual acts on the ground. He playing for Rajasthan Royals in IPL. On last Sunday, he did something out of the box and left everyone surprised.

His ‘retired out’ move was more talked about than his team’s victory in that match against Lucknow Super Giants. Ravichandran Ashwin later responded that in cricket, we have been too late to adopt such a strategy. Ashwin said that the way substitute has been used in football, in the same way he used retired out. He also said that such things will be seen in future also.

However, if there is weak link in the bowling order and in his over, batsmen uses this strategy then what! Will that be strategically correct and against game spirit? But, what if a bowler also wants to ‘retire’ in the middle of his over? Will that be plausible?

Retiring out not because of injury but because of poor rhythm or leaking big runs. Because the bowlers have been going out of the field in the event of injury to the muscles of the leg, waist, back or arm or due to falling, slipping. What if the bowler wants to go away after bowling a few deliveries of his over or the captain wants to remove him from the front because he is consuming a boundary or is not looking in rhythm, then what happens?

Ravichandran Ashwin opted for retired out because he was not able to hit big shots. He came out to bat at number six and by the 18th over his team could reach 133 runs for four wickets. For this reason, Ashwin returned to the pavilion after playing the second ball of the 19th over. He was retired so that the big hitters sitting in the dugout could come to the crease and hit big sixes to take the team to a respectable score. This also happened when his fellow batters took the team’s score to 165 in the next 10 balls. His team won this close match by just 3 runs. Here this strategy worked.

In such a situation, there is no option,
now just remember the match when Odeon Smith of Punjab Kings had to save 19 runs in the last over against Gujarat Titans. What would have happened when Punjab captain Mayank Agarwal retired the Windies bowler after leaking a boundary and handed the bowling to English bowler Liam Livingstone? However, there is no law of cricket that allows a captain to take his bowler off the front in the middle of an over under normal circumstances.
