Team India returned to the shortest format of the game with a five-match series against South Africa earlier this month. The series ended in a 2–2 draw and the deciding fifth T20I was called off due to rain. Despite facing consecutive defeats in the first two matches, Team India made a great comeback and won the next two matches.

The players’ skills were tested throughout the series with an eye on the World Cup. In this, young and senior players were given opportunities and both showed their discipline and understanding of the game.

There were some new faces in the Indian squad for the South Africa series – one of them being fast bowler Umran Malik, who was not given a chance to play the match. Umran is also part of the Indian squad for two T20 Internationals against Ireland later this month and has grabbed the attention of fans and former cricketers alike for his incredible pace. During the 2022 Indian Premier League, Umran continued to surpass the 150 kph mark with relative ease, and he took 22 wickets in 14 matches.

During a discussion on Star Sports, the possibility of Umran Malik being in the T20 World Cup squad was discussed in detail and former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar gave his opinion on the same. While Bangar insisted that Umran would make his debut ahead of the global tournament in Australia, it is important that the selectors place their faith in him.

“He will definitely get his debut (before the T20 World Cup). By the time the West Indies tour ends, I think he will have played at least five matches,” Bangar said.

“But if the result doesn’t go in your (India’s) favor in the World Cup, you can get out straight. You (hosts) took some names (Varun Chakraborty and Rahul Chahar), they were in the World Cup squad, now they are nowhere. They are not even close to the team. So, you don’t want such a talented player to be dropped just because the result doesn’t go in favor of the team,” Bangar added.

Team India will return to action in the shortest format on June 26 when all-rounder Hardik Pandya will lead the team in the first match of the series against Ireland in Malahide.
