Sri Lanka’s star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been giving brilliant performances in the 2023 World Cup qualifier with both bat and ball. On Sunday, the team had a match against Ireland at the Queens Sports Club, where Sri Lanka defeated Ireland and got their tickets for the World Cup 2023, which will be held in India later this year. Hasaranga took a stunning five-wicket haul, and the team won the match by 133 runs.
Sri Lanka put a massive score on board
While batting first in the crucial qualifying match for the ICC World Cup, Sri Lanka set a mammoth target of 326 runs for Ireland. The veteran batsman Dimuth Karunaratne scored a brilliant 103 runs off 103 balls, while the Wicketkeeper-batsman Sadeera Samrawickrama scored 82 runs off 86 balls and led Sri Lanka to a challenging score. Apart from Karunaratne and Samarawickrama, Dhanajaya de Silva also hit crucial 42 runs off 32 balls, and the Sri Lankan team went out at the second last ball of the innings with 325 runs on board.
Hasaranga picked crucial wickets
Leading the Sri Lankan bowling attack, the spinner Hasaranga picked up Ireland’s crucial wickets, which included Andrew Balbirnie,Harry Tector,Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, and Joshua Little. Although Ireland’s bowlers Mark Adair and Barry McCarthy bowled amazing spells of 4-46 and 3-56, respectively, it was overshadowed by Hasaranga’s fantastic spell of 5-79. With this win, Sri Lanka acquired their spot in the ICC World Cup while Ireland was knocked out of the qualifier.
The srilankan bowler equals this record
Till now Hasaranga has taken 16 wickets in three matches of World Cup qualifier 2023. In yesterday’s match, it was his third consecutive five-wicket haul. Now he has become only the second bowler in ODI history to take three consecutive 5-wicket hauls after legendary Pakistani Waqar Younis, who accomplished this in 1990.
Zimbabwe at top in Group A
In Group A of the World Cup qualifier, Zimbabwe is currently in the lead with three wins in three matches. Their epic victory in the last match against the West Indies amazed everyone because the West Indies were favorites to qualify for the World Cup, but Zimbabwe crushed the team and won the match by 33 runs. While batting first, Zimbabwe could only score 268 runs, so it was assumed that the West Indies would be able to chase the target, but Zimbabwe’s bowling attack had other plans as they dismissed the whole team in 44.4 overs.
